They've never been given the tools, time, and support to figure out how to understand themselves or how to share that understanding with others.

This program helps middle and high school students clarify who they are, what they stand for, and what they want to contribute to the world, and then equips them to share that vision clearly and confidently. Whether you're preparing for college applications, stepping into leadership roles, pursuing scholarships and opportunities, or simply trying to understand yourself better, this program gives you a structured process to:

• Discover and own your strengths, values, and purpose (even if you don't have it all figured out yet—nobody does)
• Build practical tools like a portfolio website, mission statement, and resume that grow with you
• Develop the communication skills to advocate for yourself and your work without feeling like you're bragging or selling out
• Connect with mentors, experts, and peers who will support your growth

You don't need to have your whole life mapped out. But you do need to know what direction you're headed.

Our Solution

Signal & Substance is a structured, hands-on program that gives you the time, space, and support to develop genuine self-awareness and learn how to communicate it effectively.

Working at your own pace through five progressive phases, you'll explore who you are, what you value, and what you want to contribute—then build the practical tools to share that with the world. You'll create a portfolio website from scratch (yes, with real code), develop a personal mission statement, and practice talking about yourself and your work with confidence.

But this isn't just about deliverables. It's about developing the self-knowledge and communication skills that will serve you in college applications, job interviews, leadership roles, and life. You'll work alongside advisors, learn from experts, and connect with peers who are on the same journey.

By the end, you won't just have a polished portfolio and resume. You'll have a clearer sense of who you are, what you're capable of, and how to advocate for yourself—without underselling or overselling, just authentic confidence in what you bring to the table.

Your Portfolio Website

The centerpiece of this program is a portfolio website that you'll build from the ground up. This isn't just another project - it's your digital home base that grows and evolves as you do.

Why a website?

• You own it. Unlike social media profiles or platforms that can change or disappear, this is yours. You control what's on it, how it looks, and who sees it.
• It grows with you. Your portfolio starts simple in Phase 1 and develops throughout the program. After you complete the program, it's still yours to update and maintain—we'll even keep it hosted for you.
• It teaches real skills. Learning to code a website from the ground up gives you practical digital literacy that transfers to countless other areas. You'll understand how the web works, not just how to use a drag-and-drop tool.
• It keeps you focused. Building with code means focusing on your content and story rather than getting distracted by endless template options and design widgets.

What about privacy?

We know not everyone wants their work fully public—and that's completely fine. Parents and students work together to choose a level of visibility that feels comfortable, whether that's a password-protected site or a fully public portfolio.

You won't build it alone.

Our team of designers and developers will teach you what you need to know and work with you to bring your vision to life—but they won't build it for you. You'll have support every step of the way through online lessons, workshops, and one-on-one help at drop-in lab sessions.

Your site will live on a program subdomain (like yourname.signalandsubstance.org), but if you want to bring your own custom domain, you can do that too. You can take your code and set it up wherever you like after the program ends. Or we can keep hosting it for you as long as you want for a small annual fee.
